THIS IS DONE ACCORDING to SANS10177 – to ensure Class “A” fire rating
New Roof / Clean Gumpole Structure: This is the process we use either on a New Roof structure or where we strip the old thatch grass from an existing roof. If there is cape reed on the inside of the roof, the grass is stripped up to the cape reed and is patched-and-repaired to be about a 50 mm layer, otherwise new 50mm layer of cape reed get installed onto the gum pole structure. . The Cape reed is then treated with Micon’s ThatchSayf (Fire retardant). All the pine to be used as rafters and counter buttons, get treated with PacSayf (Fire retardant). 8” Nails are used to nail the 50 x 38 “rafters” to every gum pole. Counter buttons then get nailed onto the “rafters” using 75 mm round wire nails. 50mm pink Aerolite is installed over pine structure to add additional fire retardant. The tiles then get attached onto the “branderings” using Harvey Clout Nails.
Re-Roof: This process is the easier of the two processes because the existing roof is retained and the tiles get installed over the existing thatch roof. Prior to the installation the old rotten thatch get combed and removed from the roof. The Thatch is then treated with Micon’s ThatchSayf (Fire retardant). All the pine to be used as rafters and counter buttons, get treated with PacSayf (Fire retardant). Holes are drilled through the gum poles and 50 x 38 pine “rafters” get attached onto every gum pole using 8 mm threaded rods. Counter buttons then get nailed onto the “rafters” using 75 mm round wire nails.
50mm Pink Aerolite is installed over pine structure to add additional fire retardant. The tiles then get attached onto the “branderings” using Harvey Clout Nails.
- 20-year MACSTEEL factory guarantee
- The complete installation is a very clean solution. No dust, flower bits or untidy roof on the inside
- All the old rotten grass is removed from the structure. No old pieces of grass fall from roof
- The Aerolite offers an extra fire retardant and acts as an insulator for temperature
- No more maintenance
- There is very little disruption to the day-to-day running of a lodge or household.
- The insulation of the traditional thatch stays in place (150 mm thatch grass), therefore the temperature is controlled very well
- The installation is much cleaner, as the removal of the existing thatch is huge logistical challenge. This process is definitely the easier of the two processes.
